The primary function of an Optical Network Terminal (ONT)-commonly referred to as an "optical modem"-is to serve as a converter between a fiber-optic network and traditional electronic devices.

The Role of the "Translator": The ONT converts the optical signals transmitted via fiber optics into electrical signals that devices such as computers and routers can understand, thereby enabling these devices to access the internet normally.

File Upload Capability: When files need to be uploaded or messages sent, the ONT translates the electrical signals back into optical signals and transmits them outward through the fiber-optic cable.

Optical-to-Electrical Conversion: It converts the optical signals carried within the fiber-optic cable into electrical signals, enabling devices such as computers, mobile phones, and routers to utilize the network.

Broadband Access: Acting as the user-side terminal in a Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) network, it provides high-speed internet access with speeds ranging from hundreds of megabits per second (Mbps) up to 10 gigabits per second (Gbps).

Multi-Service Support: Certain ONT models support converged services, such as IPTV and VoIP.

Routing and Wireless Capabilities: Modern mainstream ONTs typically integrate routing, switching, and Wi-Fi functionalities, allowing them to serve directly as a home gateway.
