An Optical Network Terminal (ONT)-also referred to as an optical terminal device-is a device that converts optical signals into electrical signals. The term "optical" in its name refers to these light-based signals, a designation attributed to their exceptionally high transmission speeds. In the context of network connectivity, the ONT plays a pivotal role: it receives optical signals transmitted via fiber-optic trunk lines and converts them into electrical signals that can be recognized and processed by devices such as computers and routers.

Furthermore, the ONT is responsible for handling network dialing and user authentication tasks. In certain configurations, the ONT can be set to "bridge mode"; in this setup, the actual dialing process is offloaded to the router, while the ONT focuses solely on the conversion between optical and electrical signals and the transmission and reception of data.

Modern ONTs frequently incorporate the functionality of both wired and, in some cases, wireless routers. This means that under specific configurations, the ONT alone is sufficient to establish an internet connection. Conversely, however, it is impossible to establish a network connection using only a router without an accompanying ONT.
